What causes a double chin?
Fat cells can grow and shrink depending on various factors, but they are not completely eliminated by weight-loss efforts. If numerous fat cells accumulate in a particular area, such as under your chin, the fat cells will remain there. Even if they get smaller, this pocket of cells is very difficult to get rid of and is referred to as stubborn fat, which can create the look of a double chin.
What treatment options are available for my double chin?
Since the only way to treat diet- and exercise-resistant fat may be to remove the cells themselves, liposuction has been a method frequently chosen by patients looking to address their double chin. The surgery effectively eliminates fat cells from the body but carries with it the associated risks and recuperation demands of an invasive surgery.
Dr. Damico is proud to offer a newer, less invasive option, known as Kybella®. Kybella® is ideal for patients at Skin Care Fort Worth who want to reduce their double chin but avoid a surgical procedure.
How does Kybella get rid of my Double Chin?
Rather than removing unwanted fat cells by suctioning them out, Kybella® destroys the cells internally, releasing the fat to be safely processed by the body.
Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, which our body also naturally produces because it helps to break down dietary fat. Once injected, Kybella® destroys fat cells in the targeted area. Since they can no longer hold fat, these cells are not able to grow larger again and your double chin is permanently eliminated.
Currently, the FDA has approved Kybella® only for the treatment of double chins.
What can I expect from a Kybella treatment session with Dr. Damico?
Dr. Damico has undergone training specifically for using Kybella to treat double chins non-surgically. As shown in our video here, one session may only take a matter of minutes.
Depending on a variety of factors, including the amount of submental fat to be reduced, many of Dr. Damico’s patients see desirable results in as little as two to four sessions, each spaced about a month apart. Some patients may find that six sessions give them their ideal chin profile.
In the weeks and months after your initial treatment session, you will begin to notice a reduction in the size of your double chin (submental fat).
